Texas is a conservative state, right?

Texas is a state where the rules apply fairly to all sides...right? Well, not if Joe Straus stays Speaker of the House.

Joe Straus opposes Gov. Perry, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst, the majority of the House, and grassroots Texans when it comes to most issues. And it shows.

When Gov. Perry proposed a set of common sense budget guidelines in his Texas Budget Compact, Straus wouldn't sign on.
When Obama trumpeted that "we can't cut our way to prosperity" so we need to raise taxes, well, Straus was right there with him saying the exact same thing. (Seriously, you can check it out here.) Well, we can't tax our way to prosperity either, Speaker Straus!

Winston Churchill
"We contend that for a nation to try to tax itself into prosperity is like a man standing in a bucket and trying to lift himself up by the handle."
Winston Churchill

"The culture of 'go along to get along' politics, where members face intimidation and retribution should they disagree with a leadership decision, stifles representative government."
Rep. David Simpson

Speaker Straus is the embodiment of
“politics as usual.”

If you're happy with the direction our nation is heading (more taxes, spending more money we don't have, more inside baseball and backroom deals, more intimidation politics), then by all means support Speaker Straus.

If you want to see real change and leadership in Texas, then ask your Representative to support David Simpson for Speaker, a true champion of the people.

So, why is the Speaker race important anyway?

The Speaker controls the appointments of all Committee chairmen, who in turn control the flow of legislation through their respective committees. Control the Speaker's chair, control the committee chairs, control legislation. Check out this video for more information on why the Speaker of the House is an important position in Texas government.

Bryan Hughes

Bryan Hughes Open Letter June 1: "Speaker Straus came into office on promises of a kinder House, and an end to retribution and internecine fights. Yet the Speaker and his team have engaged in this very conduct - from abusing the redistricting process to getting involved in races - all in an effort to defeat his conservative colleagues..."

This is the FIRST vote that your Representative will take once they're sworn in. So there's no time to waste!

Would good leadership kill these bills?

And what about all the conservative legislation that was killed by the Straus team during the last session? Here's just a small sample of the good bills that died by hook or by crook:

  1. "Businesses posting a loss wouldn't pay the franchise tax," HB 932 by Ken Paxton
  2. "Exempting school districts from certain state unfunded mandates," HB 458 by James White and Wayne Christian
  3. The bill to stop the TSA from groping innocent travelers, soldiers, and grandmas without a reason, HB 1937 by David Simpson
  4. See a full list of good bills that died under Straus' leadership at VoicesEmpower.com.

Speaker Straus CLAIMS to be pro-life, but...

Speaker Straus got a 100% rating from NARAL, one of the largest pro-abortion lobbies in the country. Also, his wife sat on the board of the local Planned Parenthood. Last time he ran for Speaker, Straus claimed to be "strongly pro-life" ...really? How can he say that with a straight face after getting a 100% pro-abortion rating? Let your Representative know why you support strong pro-lifer David Simpson.

If you played on a sports team and you knew that the referee would change the rules based on whether he liked you or not (hint: he doesn't like you)...would you think that's a fair game?

When it came to the scheduling bills, Straus was the "referee" and he didn't like conservatives.

For example...

...when a conservative bill was scheduled to be voted on one day, Straus opened the session that day, made an announcement, and then promptly adjourned without voting on the business of the day. He then told the press that there weren't enough members present...right after having just said there were enough members and opening session. You can't have your cake and eat it too, Speaker Straus!

On the other side, Rep. David Simpson has said "The race should hinge on fairness in administration and not who may amass the most power for their own position... Furthermore, public trust in our government depends upon a transparent, accountable system."
